Volume 1 is devoted to establishing a quantitative background for new design and development, and for the proper evaluation of the performance of existing types of internal combustion engines. Thermodynamic analyses are based on the characteristics of actual fuel-air media, and include conventional methods of comparing actual thermodynamic performance with ideal limits. A unique feature is the treatment of four-stroke and two-stroke air capacity. This material is based on many years of work done at Massachusetts Institute of Technology under the author's direction. No such extensive work of this kind has been carried out elsewhere. The treatment of engine friction is similarly new and complete. The aim throughout is to present the material in quantitatively usable form. The data, furnished in numerous tables and charts are ready for direct application. Illustrative examples, showing how the material presented can be used in the solution of theoretical and practical problems and included at the end of each chapter. A large bibliography is appended.
